Sometimes the most favourable — or the only direct — flight departs from a neighbouring airport. When it's worth driving to Priština, Sofia or Thessaloniki, and when it isn't.
We’ll be open right away: sometimes the best option for your trip doesn’t depart from Skopje. The neighbouring airports — Priština, Sofia, and Thessaloniki — have different airlines, different direct routes, and different prices. For certain destinations, driving to one of them makes sense. For most, it doesn’t. This article helps you make that calculation soberly.
Why consider another airport at all
Three reasons, realistically:
A direct route Skopje doesn’t have. Some destinations have no direct flight from Skopje but do from Sofia or Thessaloniki. A direct flight versus one with a connection is sometimes worth more than the price itself — less time, less risk, less stress.
A significantly lower price. The price difference between airports for the same destination is sometimes large enough to justify the journey and the cost of getting there.
A different airline. If you want a specific airline that doesn’t fly from Skopje, the neighbouring airport may be the only option.
The real calculation — not just the ticket price
This is where most people go wrong. They see only that the ticket from Sofia is cheaper and conclude it’s worth it. But the total bill includes much more:
The cost of getting to the neighbouring airport — fuel or transport, both ways. The time — Sofia and Thessaloniki are several hours’ drive, Priština is closest. Parking, if you’re leaving a car there for days. And the risk — if something goes wrong with your connection to the airport, you have no backup.
When you add all of that up, the “cheaper” ticket often works out expensive. For a family of four with luggage, the saving per ticket has to be substantial to justify a whole journey to another country and back.
When it’s worth it
Driving to a neighbouring airport usually makes sense when:
You’re travelling alone or as a couple (fewer tickets, larger proportional saving), when the price difference is genuinely large rather than marginal, when there’s a direct flight Skopje doesn’t have for your destination, or when you already have a reason to be heading that way.
When it isn’t worth it
Conversely, stay in Skopje when you’re travelling with family or a group (the cost multiplies, the saving doesn’t), when the difference is small, when you’re travelling with small children (the extra hours of driving are a burden), or when you value your time and peace more than a marginal saving.
